The Wolf Among Us: Episode 4 – In Sheep’s Clothing

In PC/Mac, Reviews by Didi Cardoso

Before you go on reading, if you are not familiar with The Wolf Among Us, you may want to stop right here and go read the review of episodes 1, 2 and 3. Or just play the game so you’re up to speed on events, and so this review doesn’t spoil everything for you.

If you’re reading this, then I will assume you’re up to date with the story. However, my choices may not be the same as yours, so keep in mind that my impressions might differ from what you have experienced in your game.

The plot thickens in Fabletown. In the previous episode, I was left with feelings of frustration and uneasiness. And while I’ve done my best to be considered, polite and civilized throughout my adventure so far, but at that point I lost it and actually killed one of the Tweedles. I was angry and thought to myself… “Ok, that’s it, I’ve had it with their crap! No more Mr. Nice Wolf!” And for a while I thought Bigby was done for. Fortunately, he is stronger than it seems, still alive and kicking, and much more motivated to see this investigation through. And so am I.

It’s difficult to review this without mentioning certain things, and boy, do I ever want to talk about all the events that have unfolded!

In Sheep’s Clothing revolves around Crane’s disappearance and the missing piece of the mirror, which is Bigby and Snow’s first priority. But then other problems arise, and with them new revelations. I had my suspicion about why Nerissa could never give a straight answer and I was right. However, I didn’t know how that specifically related to the decapitations, so discovering that was a nice little touch! And no, I didn’t kill the poor girl, nor anyone else for that matter. But Bloody Mary is certainly asking for it.

This time around we learn more about Beauty and Beast, and why they are in so much debt and in so much trouble. Everything now starts pointing in the same direction, and while reluctant to say anything, the couple eventually gives Bigby something to go on with. With two places to investigate, we have another major decision to make. It’s obviously up to you how to proceed, but I didn’t want to waste any more time screwing around. I have to say, confronting the Jersey Devil was particularly satisfying, especially when you start hating him right away, and all of a sudden, an unexpected character becomes an ally.

There is really only one lengthy QTE sequence and it’s during this fight. Not only you must mash the Q key, you also must target and click with the mouse and dodge with AWSD. There are some scenes where you can walk around and check things out, and moving around is still problematic and not very intuitive.

Similarly to previous episodes, it took me roughly two hours to complete In Sheep’s Clothing, but this time it didn’t feel short since a lot was happening. As always, the music and sound add greatly to the scenes and the voice acting is top notch. The dialogs are great and everyone seems to be on their best performance thus far. Bigby’s dialog options are once again blurry, which sort of leaves us guessing what exactly will he say when picking a certain option, and makes things a bit more complicated and stressful when attempting to choose something while on a very limited timer.

The Crooked Man really has his fingers wrapped around all of Fabletown, preying on people’s weaknesses and making their lives hell by initially giving them false hope. He has pawns that do all of his dirty work, while he sits in a safe place that conveniently never stays in one spot for long. I was feeling fairly accomplished as I walked through the door near the end, but once again left hanging as I finally found him at the very end of Episode 4.

Bibgy’s quest is coming to an end in Episode 5, and I can’t wait to see how it all goes down and how much of my choices will have an impact on the ending. Whether or not it will be a happy ending… I have no choice but to wait and see.
