If you’re reading this review, I will assume that you are up to date on the story and have played the previous episodes. If not, you should catch up on them here: Episode 1 – Episode 2 – Episode 3 – Episode 4
In the final episode of The Wolf Among Us, subtitled Cry Wolf, we get to make some tough choices and finally get some well deserved answers. Well, maybe for some the choices won’t be as tough to make and maybe the answers aren’t what we were looking for, but truth be told, Telltale ends the story on an interesting note.
Episode 5 begins right where we left off at the end of Episode 4. Bigby finally meets face to face with the Crooked Man and his “gang”. This go downhill pretty soon, as he tries to talk his way out of the situation and blaming everything on Georgie. A fight ensues, with plenty of options as far as who to attack first and plenty of button mashing and QTEs. From there, we move on to what has to be the best chase sequence in the entire game. Bigby is much like a superhero, dodging cars, jumping off roofs and hopping from vehicle to vehicle in one exciting and fairly stressful scene.
What happens next brings you down quickly from the rush, with more tough decisions and events that can’t be changed. Trust me, I tried many times, and the outcome here is always the same. I couldn’t help it but to feel bad for the pair behind the Pudding and Pie.
As you continue on your chase for the Crooked Man, you come to the most impressive fight in the whole game. Bloody Mary is a worthy opponent as she finally shows her true form, but we also get to see Bigby change into his true self. The result was one hell of a fight and a very satisfying victory.
More choices come as you choose the fate of the Crooked Man. You can be the wolf everyone fears and kill him right there, or you can bring him to the Fables and have a trial like Snow asked. The trial process is a lot like a flashback but without reliving the story. You will discuss several choices you’ve made in the past episodes, with both you and the Crooked Man trying to win the favor of the Fables. Ultimately, you still decide his fate from one of the three options.
After completing episode 5, I went back to play all episodes in a row, just to see what else I could do differently and how it would all come together in the end. I’m glad that I did, since I managed to do a few different things, save someone I didn’t think was possible to save, and overall, improve the Fables impressions of Bigby and their feelings towards him. When all was said and think that my big bad wolf wasn’t really all that bad, but was truly a badass. I’m hoping that when a Season 2 comes, the people of Fabletown will trust me a little more as their Sheriff.
As for the actual ending, you will be left with your own suspicions and unanswered questions. And as for my own… well… let’s just say I chose to go after Nerissa, and am dying to know who was chained and seemingly tortured at the butcher’s and what the list on the chalkboard meant. Oh, I’m sorry… you didn’t see that? Then go back and play it again.
