All About Skills

SKILLS

Without any skills, your Sim won’t be able to make much money, if any. Each of the skills has advantages and some are even used in group Job Objects, but all of them can be used in solo Job Objects.

Skill Objects
Body Bench press; dance cage; mechanical bull; exercise ball
Charisma Mirror; parrot
Creativity Easel; typewriter; portable bandstand
Cooking Bookcase
Logic Telescope; chess table; computer;
Mechanical Bookcase

The Body skill can be raised by riding the mechanical bull, cage dancing or by using the bench press machine. Swimming will no longer raise this skill. The Code Machine and Pizza Maker use Body skill, and the amount of money you get from breaking the piñata will be better the higher the Body skill is.

Charisma is needed for telemarketing, one of the Pizza Maker positions, the Maze game and to obtain promotions in the Restaurant business. To raise your Charisma, just walk to the nearest mirror and practice your speech or by talking to a parrot.

Painting on an easel and writing stories on a typewriter are jobs that require Creativity. You can practice it by playing the guitar or the piano, or by using the bandstand.

The Cooking skill affects the amount your preserves sell for and also the payout on the Pizza Maker. You can study Cooking from any bookcase.

Logic dictates the payout from making potions and from solving problems on the chalkboards. You can increase your Logic by gazing though a telescope, playing chess or do some research on a computer. The Maze game, the War Game and Code Machine have spots for skilled Logic users.

You can train your Sim’s Mechanical skill by studying from a bookcase. One of the positions in the Code Machine requires a player with Mechanical skill. The payment from the gnome workbench is also affected by this skill.

Logic and/or Mechanical skill are also required to advance job grades in the Robot Factory.

Your skills will determine which jobs your Sim is suited for. Since each job has its own specific primary skill, the level of that skill will affect the type and level of job your Sim gets.

In jobs, skills are used to perform certain tasks and they affect the changes of succeeding (or not) in them. Some job interactions will not be available until you reach a certain skill level.

RAISING SKILLS

To raise your skills, find a lot classified under the Skills category, and choose the one with the most people in it. Why the one with the most people? Better chances of learning faster. The skill rate will vary according to the number of Sims learning the same skill and the number of skill objects of that type on the lot. To see the learning rate of your Sim, zoom in to the closest view and check the skill increase bar above it. Below is a table showing the skill increase percentages on a Skill lot.

# of skill objects on lot Number of Sims learning the same skill
1 2 3 4 5 >6
1 11% 25%
2 14% 28% 42% 67%
3 18% 32% 46% 71% 96% 103%
4 21% 35% 49% 74% 99% 106%
5 25% 39% 53% 78% 103% 110%
>6 28% 42% 56% 81% 106% 118%

Skill gain is relatively fast in the beginning, but as your knowledge increases, gaining the next skill point becomes slower and requires more time than before.

NOTE: In all other property categories (Skill lots excluded), the benefits from having people learning skills with you will stop after the fourth Sim. So in a Skills property, five Sims playing guitars will earn Creativity points faster than five Sims playing guitars in a non-Skills property.

SKILL DECREASE AND SKILL LOCKING

Skills will start decreasing once you reach the 10.00 skill level. The skill decrease rate is based on the mood of your Sim, so pay special attention to your Sim’s needs and try to keep him/her happy to make sure the skill decrease rate is at a minimum. There will be no skill decrease for a Sim at full green (all needs fulfilled).

To prevent a skill from decreasing, you can lock it. Currently you are allowed to lock up to a total of 20 skill points, and you can choose to lock all of them in one skill or spread them out throughout different skills. Once you lock a skill point, that skill will only decrease to a maximum of .99 from that skill point.

The number of lockable skill points will also go up as your Sim ages, and you will be notified when this happens.
